Our values focus on the basic principle that all Americans should be equal, wherever you live. This means achieving equal citizenship, equal rights, and equal representation for the nearly 4 million Americans living in U.S. territories.
- Equal Citizenship. The federal government denies that Americans born in U.S. territories have a constitutional right to citizenship. We’re defending the right to citizenship in court.
- Equal Rights. The federal government argues that it has the power to turn constitutional rights on and off in U.S. territories based on the controversial Insular Cases doctrine. We’re challenging this view in court.
- Equal Representation. Americans in the territories are denied the right to vote for President and voting representation in Congress even as many from these areas defend democracy abroad through military service. Working together we can change this.
To realize our values, Equally American uses groundbreaking impact litigation and innovative grassroots organizing. Working together, we can build a new civil rights movement centered on guaranteeing equal rights, wherever you live.
